Afternoon
Tutoring and Writing Materials
Egyptian government schools are usually overcrowded and
the teaching staff is often poorly trained and underpaid.
As a result, students
must have private tutoring after school to be successful in the
final exams. Since poor families cannot afford these
expensive private lessons, their children often drop out of
school. To prevent this, community development programs provide
school supplies and tutoring for the children of over 1200
needy families. Your gift will sponsor one child in the
afternoon tutoring program over a three-month period.

Summer Camps for Girls Working
in the Mokkatam Workshops
Last summer, thanks to generous contributions through this
Catalog, the Association for the Protection of the Environment
together with volunteers from the YMCA was able to organize a
summer camp in Asafra, Alexandria, for 65 teenage girls who work
in the rag-sorting, rug-weaving, patchwork and paper recycling
workshops in Garbage
City. The program included group discussions on various
subjects, daily outings to the beach, excursions, games, crafts,
and recreational evenings. Your gift will allow more girls
to experience this
wonderful camp experience.

Books for Community
Libraries
Books are too expensive for the majority of Egyptians to buy.
Those who know how to read can rarely practice this skill and
educate or enjoy themselves through books. In the poor outskirts of
Cairo, Alexandria, and most recently also in the Delta town of
Menouf,
community development centers have set up free libraries which
are very popular and well attended. Your gift
will be used to buy more books for use in these libraries.
